Zvirekwi’s miraculous comeback
HARARE City midfielder Moses Muchenje was delighted to witness Hardlife Zvirekwi’s comeback at Rufaro on Saturday.
Their relationship dates back to school and they have played together at the now defunct Gunners and CAPS United.
“It is not our power but God’s,” Muchenje told H-Metro.
Zvirekwi survived a car accident early this year and had his hand amputated.
Few had given the Warriors’ 2017 AFCON finals right back a chance to bounce back.
Three minutes before the final whistle in a goalless draw with Harare City at the home of football, the fans that defied the cold weather witnessed the miracle.
“Hardlife is my brother from another mother. He was my senior during my days at Mt Pleasant High School.
“He was my captain. We were at Gunners together and again we were together at CAPS United. He was my captain and I was his vice.
“I have learnt a lot from him and I will always be happy to play with him. It pained me a lot what happened to his hand but it is part of life. Thank God he is alive and I was happy. I wish to play with him again even here at Harare City,” Muchenje said.
Zvirekwi got a welcome cheer from the fans, immediately taking a free-kick that could have given CAPS United the break.
“It was a fantastic feeling to be back on the pitch. I was even more thrilled with the warm welcome I received from everybody who was in the stadium,” Zvirekwi told H-Metro yesterday.
He added: “First I want to thank God so much because this was a miraculous comeback. If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t have come back trust me.
“And yes, it was through determination and a lot of hard work. Credit to the whole Zimbabwean nation for standing with me through thick and thin.”
CAPS United may not have collected maximum points, but this a game for the archives.
Muchenje said: “It was not an easy game. I was happy with the application from the team and we were ready for CAPS United.
“It gives us confidence going forward ahead of our game against Bulawayo City. We played with a lot of hunger and desire to win. We matched them and if we were to utilise our chances, it was going to make a difference.”
