ZUVA defends Usd Pricing
ZUVA Petroleum says their decision to have a number of their service stations sell fuel in foreign currency is in line with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s 2020 monetary policy statement allowing the use of free funds.
On Tuesday, Zuva announced that eight of its service stations now sell fuel in foreign currency. “We are excited to announce 8 Zuva DFI Service Stations that will be accepting foreign currency payments across the country as follows: Harare: Lorraine, Groombridge, Pendennis, and Valley; Bulawayo: Macs Garage; Beitbridge: Oasis; Mutare: Palmerstone; Victoria Falls: Zambezi,” read their statement.
They also pegged their prices as follows: Harare $1.25 Diesel, $1.22 Blend; Mutare $1.23 Diesel $1.20 Blend; Bulawayo $1.25 Diesel $1.24 blend; Beitbridge $1.26 Diesel $1.25 Blend and Vic falls $1.29 Diesel $1.28 Blend.
Although Puma already has an exist-ing forex service station in Avondale, there were some who questioned the criteria used by government to allow Zuva to sell fuel in forex despite the position on the mono currency.
However, in a brief response to an H-Metro inquiry yesterday, Zuva said their move was being guided by the recent RBZ monetary policy statement which covered on free funds: “Allowing the use of free funds within the national economy for the payment of customs duties on selected products, paying for emergency passports, procurement of basic commodities such as food items and fuel, under the direct fuel (DFI) scheme.”
In their statement, RBZ said their position on free funds should not be misconstrued as going back to dollarization, but rather as a common good for the country to promote the inflow of free funds from the diaspora and necessary to buttress the confidence that is needed under the de-dollarisation process.
