The shop, Cheurombo Investments, trading as Musinake Hardware, is said to have been built in 1981 and had a grinding mill as well as hardware that had been servicing Warren Park ever since.

H-Metro news crew saw the shop’s valid license and Health Registration Certificate issued by the City of Harare on February 3 this year.

The complex manager who was shedding tears in the face of the destruction of the store said the City of Harare isn’t doing due diligence because he pays for the licenses every year.

“I don’t understand how the City of Harare can destroy these premises which have been here since 1981, we have been paying our rates ever since so I don’t understand, what this means is that the council doesn’t practice due diligence at all, why were they giving me a license if this place is illegal.

“We are going to take up this matter because the council has committed illegality here and they should pay for it, our father bought and built this complex legally,” said the distraught Nyasha.

One Taonga Mazambani said he has been milling maize there ever since he was a boy.

“This is the grinding mill that we have been using ever since I was a boy, my mother used to send me here and now I am 35 years old, I now send my own children, we have been robbed and I think the council was supposed to have checked before doing this,” he said.

City of Harare spokesperson Michael Chideme said they are destroying all illegal structures regardless of when they were built.

“We are destroying all illegal structures, regardless of when they were built but we are going to investigate how an illegal structure was issued with a shop license,” said Chideme.
