Government has cautioned against the abandonment of scientifically proven cures for HIV/Aids in the wake of charismatic preacher, Walter Magaya’s sensational claims on Sunday that he has finally discovered the much elusive cure for the condition.
Magaya, founder of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, known for miracle healings, told a group of local and international journalists at his Harare church that the cure was in the form of a herb that he called AGUMA.
The youthful Harare preacher emphatically claimed he has tested the herb with some local HIV positive persons who have come out negative after administering it on them over a period 14 days.
He also said his cure has been approved by some Indian pharmacies which are world renowned for often successful clinical solutions on a number of ailments.
However, addressing journalists in the wake of the claims, Information and Publicity minister Monica Mutsvangwa took a rather non-committal approach to Magaya’s claims, confining her prepared address to urging locals to stick by scientifically proven clinical solutions for HIV and Aids.
“The Ministry strongly urges all clients on treatment for HIV and AIDS to continue on their prescribed medication,” Mutsvangwa aid.
“Any form of discontinuation or switch made without the guidance of medical professions may lead to adverse consequences on their health status.
“The available medicines have been proven to be safe and effective for the treatment of HIV and AIDS, they have been robust in lowering the HIV virus, as well as prolonging lives and livelihoods have improved in a remarkable way.”

Magaya’s claims have invited mixed feelings among locals with some saying the preacher must be allowed to proffer his solutions to one of the world’s most puzzling ailments while others dismissed him out rightly.
But in her address, Minister Mutsvangwa confirmed the government was not ignoring the prophet’s claims and was in the process of scientifically testing the said cure for its effectiveness as claimed.
“The relevant authorities are urgently looking into the matter, and the Ministry will soon advise the nation on the said claims.
“Modern day medicines relies on science and evidence.
“The Ministry of Health and Child Care will continue to encourage and support innovations and discoveries of new products within the regulatory framework providing for such.”
In his Sunday address to journalists, Magaya urged locals not to abandon the taking of Anti-Retroviral (ARV) drugs while his cure was being tested for its assumed effectiveness.
