VIOLENT TEACHER SENTENCED

The teacher who violently assaulted a student was yesterday ordered to perform 630 hours of community service for the offence.

Talent Chingwaru was sentenced to 36 months in prison, 18 of which were suspended on condition that he doesn’t commit an offence involving violence and assault in the next five years.

The other 18 months were suspended on condition that he performs 630 hours of community service at Parirenyatwa Hospital starting tomorrow.

Chingwaru pleaded guilty before Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga.

On reasons for sentencing, magistrate Taruvinga said the violent behaviour Chingwaru exhibited is unacceptable.

“In sentencing the court considered that you are a first offender who didn’t waste the court’s time.

“However aggravating was the violence displayed in the video, head butting the complainant. It is unacceptable behaviour. You acted in a detestable manner. You must see the consequences of failing to control your emotions, You’ve been in custody since Thursday and you have tasted how life is on the other side.

“Corporal punishments were abolished and children should be protected from all sorts of violence because it’s inhuman and degrading.

“You’re hereby sentenced to 36 months in prison; 18 are suspended on condition that you don’t commit an offence involving violence and assault in the next five years; 18 months are suspended on condition that you perform 630 hours of community service at Parirenyatwa Hospital starting tomorrow (today),” she said.

The court heard that Chingwaru assaulted the 18-year-old student at a learning institution.

The court heard that Chingwaru was recorded assaulting the student in videos that went viral on social media.

The boy filed a police report leading to Chingwaru’s arrest.
