Tragedy As Cyclone Idai Claims 82 Lives In Zimbabwe, Death Toll Set To T Rise
The country has suffered severe devastation as Cyclone Idai is reported to have claimed 82 lives with more than 200 people reported missing.
More ominously, the authorities expect the death toll is expected to increase in the next few days. Authorities in neighbouring Mozambique where the cyclone hit first say the death toll in that country has risen to 62.
So bad has been the devastation that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been forced to cut short his visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to attend to the relief efforts.
Mnangagwa has declared the tragedy a state of disaster and according to the government, his return from the UAE is to enable him to be involved directly with the national response.
In an interview with NewsDay, local government minister July Moyo said,
The deceased were at 64 this morning and the number keeps increasing and they are now 82, we were looking to bury them as early as possible once we get into the areas they are.
The government is going to assist the deceased’s families with coffins and food, that is our priority.
