Thieves break into Karoi court and steal $750

The Zimbabwe Republic Police and Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) have initiated an investigation into a burglary at Karoi Magistrate Court on Monday, during which audacious thieves made off with US$750.

According to JSC spokesperson Daniel Nemukuyu, inquiries into the incident are currently ongoing.

“We can confirm that there was a break-in at Karoi Magistrate Court on April 1, 2024. It was discovered on April 2. As we speak, our internal security department and the police are investigating the matter,” Nemukuyu said.

“They broke into the fines office and made off with US$750.

“We appeal to members of the public to help the police in arresting the accused persons and those with information to give to the police…”

Assistant Inspector Aggary Jaure, the deputy police spokesperson for Mashonaland West province, also verified the occurrence of the incident.

In 2015, Harare Magistrates Courts reportedly faced vandalism by unknown criminals, alongside the discovery of grenades outside a local bank in the central business district.

The break-in caused a halt to court operations on Friday, with Chief Magistrate Mishrod Guvamombe confirming that some court property was stolen. Guvamombe mentioned that the incident has been reported to the police.

While specific details were not provided by Guvamombe, several court officials, preferring anonymity, expressed concerns that ongoing court cases might face challenges due to stolen information.
