Teacher Defrauds Parents Of Thousands Of US Dollars

Teacher’s Divided Over Strike As Mixed Feelings Prevail

A Kwekwe High School teacher and a School Development Committee (SDC) clerk face arrest on fraud charges after they allegedly defrauded parents who were searching for Form One places at the school.

A history teacher only identified as a Mr Zimende and the SDC clerk, Sham Mwarowa, connived to defraud desperate parents and guardians just before schools were reopened two weeks ago.

The duo allegedly demanded money ranging from US$80 to US$750 after promising their victims places for their children at the school.

The issue only came to light on the opening day when school authorities discovered that there was an extra class of about 30 students.

This prompted the school head Nelson Shumba to launch an investigation and the two’s underhand dealings were unearthed.

The SDC chairperson, Takaedza Ntuli confirmed the incident to the Chronicle. He said:

We are handling a fraud case at the school where a teacher teamed up with an SDC secretary to prejudice parents who came looking for Form One places.

As we speak, we have concluded initial internal investigations and we are now reporting a case of fraud against the two to the police so that the law can take its course.

Ntuli added that the SDC has since suspended Mwarowa, while Zimende’s case is now in the hands of the police and education officials.

He said the duo’s unscrupulous dealings have placed the school in a difficult position as they are now frantically making arrangements with other schools so that they can accommodate the affected children.

Kwekwe District Schools Inspector Hebert Maziriri also confirmed receiving the report. He said:

I received the report and we initiated investigations. I am waiting for the outcome and we will compile a report that we will then send to the Provincial Education Officer who is then able to give you finer details.
