Soldiers on a robbing spree

TWO members of the national army who allegedly went on robbing spree on separate incidents with their civilian accomplices were on Monday dragged to court charged with armed robbery involving over US$20 000.

In the first case, Emmanuel Tafirenyika Kambanje was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Barbra Mateko and was remanded to today for bail application.

The State represented by Lancelot Mutsokoti alleges that Kambanje, in the company of his three alleged accomplices namely Tatenda Nyakudyano, Richard and Silas who are still at large approached the complainant who was seated in his car and began assaulting him accusing him of illegal dealing in foreign currency.

The court heard that Kambanje dragged him out of his car and continued to assault him while the others searched his car-stealing US$20 000 and $420.

Kambanje’s accomplices are believed to have fled from the scene with the money after the complainant had fired one warning shot from his gun.

The complainant managed to apprehend Kambanje with the assistance of onlookers after a stiff struggle as he resisted arrest and when they overpowered him, they took him to Kuwadzana Police Station.

In the second count, the State is alleging that the complainants Percy Kureva and his wife Universe Mapati left the kitchen door and gate unlocked when he got home around 9pm and soon after his arrival, the soldier Rwatirera Zunde and Tianseh Mazambani together with two accomplices still at large also got into the house using the kitchen door.

Soon after entering into the house, Mazambani and his team manhandled Kureva and his wife who were watching television in their lounge.

They threatened to shoot the complainants with a pistol as they were demanding money which was in the house.

As the accused were busy asking for money, one of their accomplices tied both complainants with electrical cables on their hands whilst ordering them to cover their faces with a blanket.

The accused were alleging that Kureva had US$200 000 in his house but became annoyed when Kureva surrendered US$150 and $100 which was in his bedroom.

As if that was not enough, the accused people took Kureva’s wife and directed her to the bedroom threatening to rape her if she failed to give them US$200 000 they were alleging the couple had.

The complainant took her purse and gave them $20. The accused went to Kureva and ordered him to go with them to his parked motor vehicle for a further search.

In the vehicle, they took US$150, $120, five pairs of male shoes, two Itel cell phones, perfumes, stationery, and babywear.

Police officers from Chitungwiza got information to the effect that there was an armed robbery that was occurring and police officers went to the crime scene and fired some warning shots prompting the accused to leave their motor vehicle with the registration number AEJ 1639 at the complainants’ place.

The duo was remanded in custody and told to approach the High Court for bail application.

They will be back in court on March 9.
