According to reports reaching Zim247news from online publication, NewZimbabwe, the soldier, Nicodimus Ndlovu, who was station at 1.2 Infantry Battalion in Hwange shot himself in the mouth after having sneaked out of the police camp where he and his other colleagues were camped for a COVID-19 operation around Hwange rural.

Ndlovu is reported to have disappeared from the base soon after finishing duty. His body was only discovered after his colleagues searched for him when they noticed that he had gone missing. According to a report made to the police, the now-deceased was deployed on Wednesday evening and upon completing his shift, he discovered he had lost 10 rounds of ammunition for the magazine.

‘Nicodimus Ndlovu, a ZNA member based at 1.2 Infantry Battalion in Hwange went for a Covid-19 operation with other army members and police on April at 6pm.
‘He finished duty in the morning and discovered that he had lost 10 rounds of ammunition from his AK47 rifle magazine,’ part of the police report reads.

Ndluvu is said to have then alerted his colleagues who reportedly reprimanded him for losing the ammunition. After the confrontation, he then sneaked out of the camp without anyone noticing and went to the bush where he took his own life.

Ndlovu’s body was found in the bush with a gun wound through the mouth.

Police took his body to Hwange Colliery mortuary before transferring it on Sunday to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post-mortem.

He was later taken to his rural home in Plumtree, Matabeleland South, where he was buried.

This comes as some serving and retired members of the security forces have been linked to several cases of poaching with the use of service guns. Some of the cases have appeared in court with serving members among those accused of poaching.
