Shingi Mukandi Killer Gets 48 Months In Prison

Alfred Takudzwa Machipisa the man who was arrested and charged with killing businessman and socialite Shingi Mukandi in a hit and run accident last year was found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to 48 months in prison by Harare Magistrate Edwin Marecha.

However, Machipisa will only serve an effective three years in prison after Marecha set aside a year of his sentence on condition of good behaviour. In passing sentence, Magistrate Marecha said

The accused deserves punishment for his gross negligence. A fine will trivialise the offences and worsening his case is that he did not stop after the accident.

He only pitched up at the police after three days of a manhunt. Maybe if he had stopped to check on the victim, if he was still alive or needed help, it would have been different.

Machipisa was convicted after a full trial in which he refused to participate in his own defence saying that he was invoking his right to remain silent and refused to answer questions from Prosecutor Isheunesu Mhiti.

Mukandi died on the night of July 22, 2017, in what was initially suspected to be a hit and run accident as he approached his home in Mount Pleasant. He was 33. He was travelling on a motorcycle and died on the spot after being hit by Machipisa.

The State has alleged that Machipisa fled the scene without giving any assistance or checking if Mukandi was injured. He allegedly hid the accident-damaged vehicle at his brother, Fanuel’s place at Zambezi Flats, Mabelreign, Harare.

Fanuel told the court that he was in Alfred’s car when the accident happened and testified that they drove off without rendering any aid to Mukandi. Mukandi’s father, Benjamin, also told the court that he suspected that his son was a victim of premeditated murder as the scene was not consistent with an accident.
