. . . FC Platinum’s hopes end
FC Platinum’s hopes of going beyond the CAF Champions League group stage ended following a 1-1 draw with Egyptian giants Al Ahly at Barbourfields on Saturday.
The result meant even if the Zimbabwe champions went on to win their two remaining matches in Group B, they cannot eclipse log leaders Etoile du Sahel (nine points) and second-placed Al Ahly (seven points).
The Zvishavane miners have a chance to attain seven points of they win the remaining matches but Al Ahly have an edge on head-to-head.
Pure Platinum play host Al-Hilal of Sudan, who are on six points, in a fortnight before travelling to du Sahel a week later.
However, assistant coach Lizwe Sweswe is excited with his team’s performance against Africa’s most successful club and in the general progression in the competition.
New signing Stanley Ngala, who was making his debut, scored for the hosts 19 minutes into the game before Marwan Mohsen equalised for the visitors in the 52nd minute.
“It was a tough match but well done to the boys for putting up a splendid performance especially playing one the biggest teams in the continent.
“All in all, I think we nearly collected maximum points but later failed to manage the quarters of the game especially the first quarter of the second half. I think we gave it all, the boys were pushing until we got that goal also we had some chances in the second half.
“Our possession was good; I feel we should have won this game. It’s now tough for us, we wanted to win today’s match such that we stay in the competition. What I’m now happy for is the improvement from the team. Today (Saturday) was different with the past three games, we were good,” said Sweswe.
Al Ahly coach Rene Weiler was disappointed for dropping crucial points.
“It was a tough game, we didn’t play well in the first half and better in the second. At the end we were disappointed because our target was to win, however, we have to accept the result,” he said.
