Serial robber, rapist pleads guilty…Implicated prison officer in prison break
The ‘serial rapist’ who made the headlines for escaping Harare Remand Prison was in court yesterday where he implicated a prison officer claiming that he was the one who facilitated his prison break.
Sam Muropa, according to court records, has been convicted before for robbery which he was sentenced to four years in prison.
He was serving at Kentucky Estate Prison where he escaped and was later apprehended and sentenced to three years in prison and is currently on remand for 19 counts of robbery and rape where he made his latest escape.
Muropa yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Barbra Mateko and pleaded guilty to escaping and told the court that a prison guard by the name Ngonidzashe Munhuuripi facilitated his release on instruction from his brother based in South Africa.
“I was advised by Munhuuripi that he had been in contact with my brother and they had made a deal to facilitate my release even though I had been granted bail on one case only, from the 19 that I am facing but advised me that he wasn’t going to give me the full details as it would get him in trouble.
“I was made to sit amongst other who had paid bail and was given my clothes and I was released using a different route out of the prison and I left,” he said.
Muropa was committed into D class cell, and his escape was discovered after a head count on October 1 at the prison and was arrested four days later in Kuwadzana.
Muropa was also facing a charge of theft of a motor vehicle which he pleaded not guilty to.
The complainant is Bruce Mupotsa of Crowborough.
The court heard that on October 5 at around 7pm, Mupotsa parked his vehicle, an unregistered Toyota Wish at Kuwadzana 2 Shopping Center where he was having some drinks.
It is alleged that Muropa approached Mupotsa and requested to hire his vehicle from Kuwadzana to White House alleging that he wanted to offer transport to his girlfriend who was in the CBD at that time.
Muropa asked to place his cell phone on the charger in the car as he was waiting for his girlfriend and as he was sitting on the driver’s seat, he started the car and drove off at a high speed hooting.
Muropa was later spotted in Kuwadzana driving the vehicle leading to his arrest.
Muropa will be back in court on October 13 for sentencing.
