Sekuru Banda Plans To Build US$500 000 Rehab Centre For Drug Addicts
Trend-setting Harare traditional healer, Kamwelo Banda popularly known as Sekuru Banda has opened a new leaf in his philanthropic portfolio after setting up a $500 000 drug rehabilitation center that is set to assist youths from across the Southern Africa region.
In an interview with journalists yesterday, Sekuru Banda said his newly opened center that will be administered by his newly formed The Kamwelo Banda Trust will assist those battling against drug addiction, one of the major problems affecting productivity among today’s youths.
“Having realized that young person of today including musicians. In such circumstances, talent goes to waste and I could not just sit and watch them from drug abuse.
“People know me as a traditional healer, but it is important for people to also know that I a champion of morality and community development.
“If these youths are not restrained from abusing drugs, they will eventually commit crimes that will land them in jail,” said Sekuru Banda.
He added that his decision to intervene was based on random research he undertook which proved that most drug abusers were young people.
Sekuru Banda said he at some point he visited Mbare to connect and understand reasons behind substance abuse by young people, a visit that saw him interact with Zimdancehall artists at the popular Chillspot Records.
Sekuru Banda’s center will provide psycho-social support and enlist the services of social workers and counselors.
The Kamwelo Banda (KB) Trust Fund will fund most of the projects at the rehabilitation center.
Dr Chido Rwafa, the Deputy Director of Mental Health Services in the Ministry of Health and Childcare said substance-related disorders are one of the top three contributors to mental health problems in the country.
“These disorders are wreaking havoc in our families and communities and over-stretching an already overburdened health system,” she said.
According to a local online publication The SpikedZW, Sekuru Banda is famous for his power to return lost goods and reunite lovers.
He recently topped a survey of most influential religious leaders in the country ahead of personalities such as Apostle Ezekiel Guti (ZAOGA), Prophet Emanuel Makandiwa (UFIC), Prophet Walter Magaya (P.H.D Ministries) among others.
