#SANCTIONSMARCH Reform or no deal – UK tells Zim
UNITED Kingdom (UK) ambassador to Zimbabwe Friday told the Zanu PF government to reform and fight against corruption and human rights abuses.
The statement by the UK embassy in Zimbabwe comes amid mounting pressure from the South African Development Committee (Sadc) on Western countries to remove the sanctions they have imposed on Zimbabwe.
In a twitter post, Melanie Robinson said the restrictive measures by the European Union only targeted the Mugabes and the Zimbabwe Defence Industries.
The UK claims to be united with the people of Zimbabwe in their fight against corruption and humans rights abuses, adding the government should focus its attention on those vices.
According to the Government of Zimbabwe, smart sanctions have led to the economic meltdown in the country, with Zimbabwe now being shunned by international financial markets and foreign direct investors.
The United States in 2001 also passed the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (Zidera).
While Zidera is sold to the world as targeting only a few individuals, it has become clear that the sanctions are hitting ordinary people the hardest.
Zimbabwe is currently unable to participate in programmes created by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and International Monetary Fund to assist in the transformation and resuscitation of Zimbabwe’s economy.
Today, all Sadc nations join Zimbabwe in its anti-sanctions campaign that is scheduled to begin early in this morning across the country.
The government has also made today a public holiday.
