Real Open Opportunities for Transformation Support (ROOTS) in conjunction with the Department of Social Services has come to the rescue of vulnerable community members for the duration of the 21-day lockdown.
ROOTS’ director Beatrice Savadye said they have embarked on the initiative to donate some food hampers to the elderly and other vulnerable people.
“We are working with the relevant departments from Information, Ministry of Health and Social Services in spearheading this initiative.
“As a grassroots organization we work with communities and we understood the situation on the ground following the lockdown.
“Women and girls will be the busiest where they will be doing a lot chores at home including fetching water especially in areas where there are challenges of water,” she said.
Savadye said they are pleading with the Government to increase water supply to the communities who are in need.
“Many communities depend on selling at the markets so the lockdown has affected them.
“Some had no money whilst some were in panic buying thus we are providing some food hampers.
“We are working with the department of social services who have a database of most critical communities.
“Yesterday (Monday) we visited the elderly in Bindura, Chipadze area,” said Savadye.
“No one is looking after these elderly women, so we are donating and we understand its Government’s duty to do all that but as a community, we are playing our part.
“We are also appealing for more support from well-wishers and assist these vulnerable communities.
“If we had adequate funds we will be delivering door to door and now we are going to Hopley Farm, Epworth and other areas.”
