R.G Mugabe Int Airport facelift on course
The expansion of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport is on course, with notable progress having been made on the arrival and departure sides.
The expansion of the country’s biggest airport to handle 6 million passengers upon completion by 2022, is one of the largest national projects carried out under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
The upgrading of the facility is expected to transform the economic performance of the country through attracting major airlines, thereby boosting cargo volumes and passenger arrivals.
Rehabilitation of the airport’s runway is also on course amid high expectation that it will be finalized by the end of the year.
Concern has however been raised over delays in unlocking payment for contractors spearheading the US$153 million project bankrolled through a loan facility from the China Eximbank.
The issue was raised to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development during a tour of the project this Thursday.
Upon completion of the facelift, the Robert Mugabe International Airport is expected to be a regional hub for airlines in a move expected to help restore the country’s status in the aviation sector which at its peak hosted over 40 air carriers.
