Police received fewer criminal cases between March 30 and April 15 this year, compared to the same period last year.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in a statement:

Because of the lockdown, most people are safely staying at home securing their properties.

Police deployments have increased the visibility of police officers and other security forces in the communities, a development that has drastically reduced the crime rate in the first 17 days of the lockdown period.

Roadblocks are all over and stolen items cannot easily pass through roadblocks undetected.

Statistics reveal that reported cases of various forms of crime declined significantly between March 30 and April 15 when compared to the same period last year.

For instance, 65 plain robberies were recorded in the first 17 days of the lockdown while 150 such cases were reported between March 30 and April 15 2019.

The national lockdown commenced on March 30 and was initially set to elapse on 19 April. It was however extended to May 3 following similar extensions by neighboring countries.
