A Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737 passenger plane believed to be ferrying 50 passengers reportedly went missing just after takeoff from Jakarta airport in Indonesia today, the BBC reports.
The plane, headed for Pontianak in West Kalimantan province, reportedly lost contact after takeoff and lost 10 000ft in altitude a few minutes after take-off, according to Flightradar24.com
Social media users are reportedly sharing photos of aircraft debris after residents of the island close to the area where the airplane disappeared found objects they thought were debris from the missing plane.
According to official reports, the last contact with the plane was a 27-year-old Boeing 737-500. with the call sign SJY182, was made at 14:40 local time (07:40 GMT).
Sriwijaya Air said it is still gathering information about the flight.
