Outspoken MP demands gvt to disclose on Operation Restore Legacy ‘deaths’

Priscilla Misihairabwi says the new government should disclose what took place during last November’s coup which she alleges may have caused the deaths of some of those loyal to the deposed former President Robert Mugabe.

Misihairabwi was speaking at a Zimbabwe Election Support Network organised debate series titled ‘Making elections Make Sense’ on Thursday.

She vowed she would soon move a motion in Parliament to have Mnangagwa explain allegations of atrocities by the army during the coup.

The outspoken legislator, known for representing disadvantaged girls and women in the august house, alleged that no-one really knew what happened during the coup period, and called for a truth telling in parliament by President Mnangagwa.

“We do not know whether it was a coup or not but …… We have people saying it was a bloodless coup and we are not so sure if it was a bloody coup or not.

“We do not know how many women were raped in this so-called bloodless coup,” Misihairabwi said.

However, Petina Gappah, a Zimbabwean international lawyer who is helping President Mnangagwa prepare for his appearance at the Davos World Economic Forum Meeting next week, dismissed any assertions that some people, especially state agents, died during the period Mugabe was dethroned by the army.

She urged people to work with confirmed reports rather than basing their arguments on assumptions.

“As a lawyer I do not want to work with unsubstantiated information. I do not talk about things that I am not really sure about,” Gappah said.

Mnangagwa is under pressure to deal with the 1980s Gukurahundi genocide and other atrocities committed by government and Zanu PF agents.

During his engagement with youths at the Celebration Centre on Thursday, Mnangagwa urged Zimbabweans to forget about the past.

“Let us forget about the past. There is nothing that one can do anymore, but we need to preach love, love. Every Zimbabwean has a role to play and to look into the future,” Mnangagwa said.
