Bulus Amos, a Nigerian senator representing Gombe South, said the appointments are part of his empowerment drive aimed at reducing joblessness, youth restiveness, thuggery, and other social vices.

Nigerian media quotes Amos saying that the 118 appointees comprised two personal assistants drawn from each of the 40 wards in his constituency district and another 38 special assistants.

The senator made the disclosure in a statement through his spokesperson, Abdul Lauya, on Thursday, February 6, according to Premium Times newspaper.

He said those holding positions as special assistants would represent various special interests including women, youth, students, physically challenged and the aged through the constituency office.

Amos stated that the appointees serving as personal assistants are to serve as links between the lawmaker and the grassroots.
