National Museum bosses nabbed
Two National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe directors were dragged to court charged with criminal abuse of office involving over $24 000.
Darlington Munyikwa and Godfrey Mahachi were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa. The duo was released on $100 bail coupled with conditions that ordered them to surrender their travel documents, report every Friday at their nearest police stations and not to interfere with witnesses in the matter.
The State led by Sabastian Mutizirwa told the court that sometime in July 2013, the National Museums received a circular from the secretary of the Home Affairs which clearly highlighted fuels for the business and for personal use.
The circular indicated 800 liters for the minister, 600 litres for the permanent secretary and 400 litres for the director. In accordance to the circular, Mahachi as the executive director received 560 while Munyikwa the deputy director received 500 litres for both business and personal use.
Despite the ministerial directive, the duo connived and acted in contradiction to their duties as public officers and allocated an extra 40 litres of fuel every week which they termed ‘executive fuel errands’ which fuel they drew from the institution for family use without it being approved by the ministry.
The illegal dealings went on from 2013 resulting in the institution losing $18 430 litres of fuel worth $24 751.The matter was remanded to March 19.
