Mutare residents warned against ‘street’ fish…Nearby dam contaminated!

THE ENVIRONMENT Management Agency has urged residents in Mutare to desist from buying fish from unauthorised sellers.

This comes after the Fern Valley dam was contaminated with toxic substances, an act believed to have been done by fish poachers.

EMA education and publicity officer Alice Chivese Rutsvara said:

“We received the report from Mutare city council on Monday September 6 in regards to the poisoning of Fern Valley dam by an unknown substance which led to the death of fish in the dam.

“We believe this was done by fish poachers, so we are urging the public to desist from buying fish from unauthorised sellers, because this can be hazardous to health,” she said.

She revealed that a joint inspection was done by EMA and Mutare city council.

She added:

“A joint inspection was conducted by EMA and Mutare city council, the inspection report is 100 percent confirming that the dam was polluted by a poisonous substance.”

Meanwhile samples have been collected for lab test for analysis.

“As of now we are waiting for results since we collected water sample for full chemical and biological analysis.

“A fish sample was collected for fish kill investigation and toxic substances analysis,” said Rutsvara.
