The murder suspect, who has been on the run since 2002, appeared in court on Tuesday after he was apprehended at a local hotel during the MDC-T congress over the weekend.
The suspect, Sairasi Soromoni Chikohwero, appeared before Harare magistrate Barbra Mateko and was remanded in custody until 11 January 2021.
He was also placed back on remand as he had an outstanding warrant for arrest.
Allegations are that Chikohwero and his alleged accomplices went to the now deceased Ali Khan Manjengwa’s place of residence in Mbare Nenyere Flats and shot him once in the head with a pistol following a political misunderstanding.
Manjengwa passed away due to a gunshot wound before he was ferried to a hospital.
Chikohwero was placed on remand but later fled and yesterday he told the court that he fled because there had been attempts on his life.
“I fled in 2002 because there had been several attempts to kill me which prompted me to flee to South Africa fearing for my life and a warrant of arrest was issued as I was now a fugitive,” he said.
Chikohwero was arrested on December 27 2020 while attending the Movement for Democratic Change Extra-Ordinary Congress at a local hotel in the capital.
Michael Reza appeared for the State.
