Former Zanu PF youth league leader and once ardent Mugabe bootlicker Kudzanai Chipanga resurfaced at President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration with a surprise plea on Zimbabweans to embrace the new leader.
“We need to embrace the new President and the new government. What is important are not individuals but our country.
“We now need to call it a day when it comes to politics,” Chipanga told NewZimbabwe.com.
The former Makoni West MP was hardly known among Zimbabweans until the period of former President Robert Mugabe’s controversial youth interface rallies last year where he often delighted in pouring scorn on Mnangagwa.
“Pasi nevanorota vachitonga (damn those who daydream being rulers of this country),” Chipanga would often chant in apparent reference to then Vice President Mnangagwa, who was often accused of having unbridled ambition to become President.
But the leading light in Zanu PF’s infamous G40 faction soon realised he had pushed his luck way too far after penning a four-page statement ridiculing then defence forces commander and now Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who had given clear hints to his intentions to lead a coup against Mugabe.
“All those in security sector fatigues who wish to engage in politics are free to throw their hats in the ring and not hide behind the barrel of the gun,” the excitable youth league leader said then.
He was soon to realise his mistakes after the coup when he was picked up by the military, detained and forced into an ignominious public apology for his cheeky sneers at the country’s most feared men, then.
Fast forward to August 25, the one-time high-flier was Sunday relegated into the terraces during Mnangagwa’s inauguration at the National Sports Stadium, mingling with ordinary folk although seemingly unperturbed by his status downgrade.
“Elections are now water under the bridge,” he said.
“We now need to embrace the new trajectory and allow the new President to perform his duties as mandated by the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.
“What is important in not politics but economics. The President is on the right path because he is prioritising economics.”
