. . . demand condoms in restrooms
. . . call for the scrapping of assignments fine

MORGAN ZINTEC College students yesterday demonstrated over being fined for late submission of assignments as well as the institution’s failure to provide condoms in restrooms, which they claimed were also filthy.

Allegations were also that the students were being barred from attending lectures for being late.

The students chanted slogans and displayed placards demanding the ouster of college principal, Tonderai Zenda.

Third year-students’ representative, Takawira Mutuswa said Zenda was treating them like kindergartens.

“As students, we are not happy with the way he is treating us. For the past few days half of the students were not allowed attend lectures for arriving at school five minutes late,” said Mutuswa.

He added:

“The guard was instructed to lock gates by 8 o’clock sharp even if some would have encountered transport challenges coming to the college.

“This is an adult school not a nursery school where our rights are left violated without a voice.

“He came this term but his attitude towards students is bad and is ever boasting of being a learned person that is why he does not respect activities like sports and arts.

“On Tuesday people spent the whole day outside the school gate and only a few people attended lectures.

“We are asked to pay $5 cash as fine for submitting assignments late.

“I don’t get reason for paying fine for late submission and the other things; he expects us to submit the assignments early but we spend the whole day locked outside,” he said.

Mutuswa added:

“The SRC (Student Representative Council) is failing to represent us since they are dancing to his tune that is why we want an amendment of the SRC selection criteria from time to time.

“We need people who listen to the students but Zenda is yet to develop a listening ear.”

Another student complained about the services being offered at school.

“We were told to top up money for our diet to improve but nothing has changed.

“We understand that the economy is not in good shape but the cooks are letting us down; if we are eating cabbage, that cabbage should be properly done.

“They don’t put condoms in the rest rooms and again those rest rooms are always dirty,” a female student said.

Addressing the students, Dr Zenda apologised to students for failing to meet his financial committee in time to release money for food.

“I have heard your grievances and we have spoken to the kitchen staff and I’m certain that the problem is going to be fixed soon,” said Zenda.

“I’m very sorry but I heard about the food situation yesterday and I promise to meet with the finance committee and discuss the issue.

“We are going to make sure that your diet will improve,” he said.

He added:

“For the issue of the school starting time, I have no regret and we will not tolerate late comers since education system respects time.

“A teacher is supposed to be on time always, therefore we are training you to be good teachers.”

Zenda urged the students to communicate to the Dean of Students if they are faced with any problems.
