Minors Wallow In Remand Prison For Months
Two minors aged 16 and 17 years of age from Epworth who were arrested for the ritual murder of suspected Avenues lady of the night Samantha Hlahla last year have been stuck at Harare Remand Prison for the past three months.
The two teenagers who cannot be named for ethical reasons due to their ages allegedly murdered Samantha at her apartment in the Avenues after consulting a traditional healer who advised them that they needed human blood for their money making charms to work.
When they initially appeared in court, they were denied bail by Harare Magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa who advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.
Normally juveniles are not supposed to be detained in adult prisons, however, in this case, the pair had to be locked up as they could not be released without proper assessments to enable them to be placed on probationary supervision.
The two were released from remand prison recently after High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi granted them bail. The teenage killers are now under probationary supervision and will also be receiving professional counselling.
Justice Chitapi also ordered the juveniles to report to the police periodically as they wait to stand trial.
