Mbare Hostels a health ticking time bomb
Mbare hostels residents are sitting on health time as worn out sewer pipes are gushing out raw sewage posing danger of water borne diseases in the country’s most popular suburb.
A visit to the high density suburb showed that Shawasha, Nenyere and Matapi hostels are posing a serious threat on residents who say they are tired of empty promises from the authorities.
“City council officials came here sometime last year on a tour and promised to either repair or create what they called family units but up to now we continue to live under unhuman conditions” lamented Trevor Chinogurei who resides in Shawasha hostels.
Repair of pipes in these hostels is long overdue worst still children continue to play around the flowing sewer. Some residents say any disease outbreak within the suburb particularly in the hostels will wreak untold havoc because the situation is out of control.
“It is by the grace of God that we have survived under these conditions but any disease outbreak will bring untold suffering to the suburb and the nation at large the situation is now out of control” said Cleopas Nhete a cobbler in the suburb
The city council is on record saying they were looking for partners to either renovate the hostels or to demolish them so that they build what they called family units.
With hundreds of people in the hostels urgent intervention is required to salvage the situation before it turns to be the 2008 cholera outbreak which claimed more than 4000 lives.
