The 59-year-old daughter of former president Nelson Mandela and struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, passed away at a Johannesburg hospital in the early hours of this morning.
She came to international prominence in 1985, when she read her father’s letter rejecting an offer by the apartheid regime that demanded him to denounce violence perpetrated by his movement, the Africa National Congress, the brutal system of racial discrimination for him to be released from prison.
Zindzi read the letter at a packed public meeting that was broadcast around the world.
