Man U squad hit by Covid-19 outbreak ahead of Newcastle clash

Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at Old Trafford is set to go ahead tonight, despite a Covid-19 outbreak in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Up to three members of Solskjaer’s backroom staff have been forced to self-isolate after coming into close contact with an individual who had tested positive for coronavirus.

The coaches tested positive for Covid-19 and did not travel to Turin for Thursday’s 4-0 win against Real Sociedad.

In a brief statement, United confirmed that Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey will join Solskjaer on the bench this evening as replacements.

‘Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey will join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the bench this evening due to some of the coaching staff having to self isolate,’ a statement read.

The home Premier League game against Newcastle United at Old Trafford will kick off at 19:00 GMT.

Solskjaer’s backroom staff includes Mike Phelan, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Kieran McKenna, but the fact that Butt and Dempsey will be on the bench suggests that all four of those coaches will be in self-isolation.

United closed their training centre after the results of three positive tests and a deep clean was undertaken at Carrington.

However, United are confident that they have avoided the spread of the outbreak to any members of the playing staff and at this point in time for the game against the Magpies this evening will go ahead.

The Red Devils are looking to capitalise on dropped points from top four rivals Liverpool and Chelsea this weekend.
