A MUTOKO man reportedly stoned his wife to death on Monday after a misunderstanding.
In a statement, Mashonaland East police spokesperson Tendai Mwanza said the suspect, Oswell Chimbwanda, is currently on the run and the police are appealing to members of the public who may have information on his whereabouts to come forward.
The now-deceased Winnet Muchemwa was married to Chimbwanda and the two were frequently having domestic disputes, most times degenerating into physical fights.
The two had a pending domestic violence case. Sometime last month, the accused left home and started residing at his parents’ home, which is approximately 50 metres from his matrimonial home, leaving Winnet Muchemwa with their four-month-old baby.
On July 12, it is said that the accused woke up at around 4 am, preparing to go to work at a local quarry company when Muchemwa allegedly walked towards him and started shouting abusive words.
Chimbwanda’s mother Revai Chimbwanda, 64, heard the noise. Muchemwa reportedly followed her husband on his way to work and she caught up with him about 200 metres from their homestead.
The accused and Muchemwa continued touting at each other. Revai and her husband Tonderai Chimbwanda, 66, of Mubvumbi village under Chief Charehwa, Mutoko followed the two a while later, only to discover that there was a pool of blood and the body of the deceased was dragged and dumped at a nearby river, which is about 50 metres from the scene.
There was a trail of blood leading them to a nearby river where they saw the body.
A report was later made at ZRP Mutoko. ZRP Mutoko attended the scene and discovered the body covered with a cloth and in a pool of blood. A log and a stone were also found close to the body.
ZRP Mutoko took the body to Murewa Hospital mortuary for post mortem.
