Maid Sentenced To 2 Years For Brutal Assault On Employers’ 2-Year-Old Child
A Bulawayo maid will have the next 16 months in jail to rethink and review her actions after she was convicted of assaulting her employer’s 2-year-old child for breaking a dinner plate.
Appearing before Western Commonage magistrate Ms Tancy Dube, the maid Silibaziso Tshuma pleaded guilty to a charge of ill-treatment or alternatively neglect of a young child. She argued that she wanted to discipline the child for breaking the plate.
Magistrate Dube sentenced her to 24 months in prison. However, she will spend an effective 16 months in prison after the magistrate suspended five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.
In her testimony, Tshuma’s employer Ms Ncube who resides in South Africa told the court,
I was called by my sister who told me that when she went to see the child she noticed some bruises and asked her what had happened. My daughter told her she had been hit by the maid.
The matter was reported to the police. Despite the maid’s claims that she had used a stick to hit the child, the prosecution argued that the bruises on the child indicated a severe beating with a weapon that was more than a mere stick.
