Kwekwe Robbers Captured After Terrorizing Midlands
The police have nabbed a trio of suspected robbers from Kwekwe, who are believed to be behind a spate of robberies in the Midlands towns of Gweru, Kwekwe, and Kadoma.
According to reports by Masvingo Mirror, the trio was found with a Pietro Berreta pistol with 48 rounds.
They suspect that the firearm was smuggled from South Africa.
The three who all hail from Mbizo in Kwekwe are Keen Cian Makainganwa (34); Tawanda Rodney Chiku (29) and Obvious Magodhi (24).
They were arrested on Monday.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has seen an increase in gender based violence cases in the first 11 days of the national lockdown.
According to reports by Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ), at least 764 cases of gender based violence were reported in less than 2 weeks of the lockdown.
The feminist group has urged government to be proactive in dealing with rampant and unchecked gender-based violence as opposed to leaving the task to NGOs.
“As of 13th April 2020, we have noted the following critical emerging issues that require urgent redress, gender-based violence cases on the rise-reports,” WCoZ said.
The country usually records an average of 500 cases a month but the new statistics are alarming.
WCoZ said if was concerned with the attitude the country’s leadership has adapted when it comes to GVB.
They said the leadership is not actively speaking out loudly against GBV, making the lives of victims even more miserable.
“We re-emphasize that GBV responsiveness is critical within the COVID-19 pandemic and we recommend the pro-activeness of government,” they said.
A GBV hotline, ‘2019’ to help attend to victims as well as help in eradicating the crime has been set up.
