A 31-year-old Bulawayo commuter omnibus driver was arrested on Friday for calling President Emmerson Mnangagwa a dog. David Ndlovu is being charged with Disorderly Conduct in a Public Place as defined in section 41(b) of the Criminal law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

He spent Friday night detained at Bulawayo Central police station before being granted free bail on Saturday.

According to the police charge sheet, Ndlovu who resides at in Saurcertown in the city, on 6 September this year met one, Sibekezile Jele at Puma Service Station within the city centre.

Jele, who is employed as a nurse aid by a local home nursing institution, approached a vendor intending to buy paraffin.

Jele queried that the paraffin was too expensive.

Ndlovu then allegedly interjected and said in isiNdebele language “Wena hantsho wavota wathi ED pfee, sizabona ukuthi inja leyo izalenzelani” (You voted for ED, we will see what that dog shall do for you).

Jele immediately headed for Mzilikazi police station where he made a police report, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.

Ndlovu, who is denying the charges, is being represented by the Dixon Abraham from the Christian Legal Society. His expected to appear in court again on Tuesday.

During ousted former President Robert Mugabe’s era, several political activists and ordinary Zimbabweans were arrested for insulting Mugabe.

Most of the alleged cases were later thrown out within the courts.
