Karoi turns dumpsite into industry

KAROI Town Council has turned its dumpsite into an industry.

Waste separation is now being done by community-based organisations, who are taking waste as an important resource through adding value to it.

Karoi Town Council Engineer, Oswell Mazvimbakupa said there was so much value coming out of the waste at the dumpsite to the extent that even some families were earning decent living.

Mazvimbakupa said council made conceited efforts in educating residents and partnering with community based organisations on proper solid waste management practices in order to bring sanity to the town.

“As Council we took a step in educating residents on separation of waste at source and we have partnered with CBOs to the extent that our dumpsite has turned to be an industry as there is a lot of recycling being done,” said Mazvimbakupa.

Mazvimbakupa said Karoi Town Council ventured into Private Public Partnership with private players like Community, Health, Environmental and Natural Resources Initiatives which translates revealingly to “be clean” and CHIMA a local a Community Based Organization.

CHENAI Project is a green community based organisation that is focused on recovering value from post-consumer material. It creates innovative adaptations of recycled waste that is commercially attractive to a host of customer segments.

Mazvimbakupa said while Chenai is concentrating on recycling of plastics, CHIMA is more concerned on scrape metal.
