Journalist arrested for filming the arrest of ARTUZ leaders.
The arrests took place at the Ministry of Finance where teachers were gathered to protest the “death” of their salaries. A journalist with New Zimbabwe, Leopold Munhende, has been arrested for filming the arrest of Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Leaders.
Open Parly posted on Twitter announcing the arrest of the journalist. The publication said: A journalist with @NewZimbabweCom Leopold Munhende has been also arrested by the police for filming the arrest of @ARTUZ_teachers members at New Gvt complex. @misazimbabwe@InfoMinZW@nickmangwana
ARTUZ president, Obert Masaraure and lawyer Doug Coltart were the first to be arrested over the protests. The arrests come when the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa is saying that it is committed to ensuring freedom of speech and association.
The government is also saying that media reforms are underway and that democratic space has since been expanded since the departure of former President Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe was often accused of repressing freedom of speech and the torture and abduction of the missing journalist, Itai Dzamara, was often cited as indicative of the repression.
During the opposition MDC demonstration that was scheduled for the 16th of August, another journalist was arrested when he was trying to help a woman whom the police had reportedly injured whilst dispersing protesters.
