Mt Pleasant Councilor Jacob Mafume (MDC Alliance via PDP) was elected the new Harare City Mayor.
Jacob Mafume was announced the winner and the new Harare mayor after garnering 19 votes against Councillor Mukunguma who also got 14 votes
35 councilors were expected to vote but one councilor was absent and sent an apology. Out of the 33 votes that were cast, there was only one spoilt paper.
In his acceptance speech, His Worship Mafume said he wants to turn Harare around to be a smart city.
Mayor Mafume promised to lead a corruption-free council and urged his team to prioritize service delivery.
He also said there is a need for stability at the townhouse and though it is a difficult time for workers, he promised to look into their welfare.
Councillor Mupamawonde was the Acting Mayor after Councillor Herbert Gomba was recalled by the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe for supporting the main opposition MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa.
A decision by MDC-T Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora to recall Herbert Gomba (MDC Alliance) as Mayor of Harare seems to have backfired after MDC Alliance nominated Mafume to run for the mayorship since he was formerly with PDP (People’s Democratic Party) which was led by Tendai Biti.
This means the MDC-T cannot recall Mafume using the Supreme Court judgment that has seen a number of MPs and councilors being recalled by MDC-T.
Jacob Mafume victory asserts that the MDC Alliance leader still has influence in Harare despite being involved in a power struggle with MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe.
