Vice President of Iran for Women and Family Affairs, Masoumeh Ebtekar is among 254 people infected with the virus in the Middle Eastern nation, where 26 people have been killed by the outbreak.

According to the Independent, Ebtekar is better known internationally as the English-language spokeswoman for the hostage-takers who seized the US embassy in Tehran in 1979, sparking a 444-day diplomatic crisis.

Ebtekar becomes the second high ranking Iran government official to be diagnosed with the deadly disease. Her diagnosis comes a few days after Iran’s deputy health minister and an MP both tested positive for the new coronavirus.

The deputy health minister, Iraj Harirchi, was confirmed to have the coronavirus on Tuesday, barely 24 hours after he denied covering up the scale of the outbreak in his country. He appeared in physical discomfort and was profusely sweating as he spoke to reporters on Monday.

There have been 245 confirmed cases of the coronavirus which have resulted in 26 deaths in Iran.

Iran has since cancelled Friday prayers in the capital, Tehran, and elsewhere in the country. The move came in response to a drastic jump in the number of confirmed cases from 100 to 245. Iran has also banned Chinese citizens from entering the country.

The novel coronavirus was first reported in China in December last year and has since frog-jumped into a 48 more countries killing thousands of people mostly in mainland China. As of February 27, the death toll in the world stands at 2 800, with 82 000 confirmed cases of infections. In China alone, the coronavirus has killed 2 747 people and infected a further 78 000.
