Information Deputy Minister Energy Mutodi has threatened to cut government adverts from Trevor Ncube’s media empire after the publisher recently hiked cover prices of his three newspapers citing viability concerns.
Ncube, Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) owner, doubled the prices of his papers, Newsday and weeklies, Independent and Standard newspapers.
But this did not go down well with Mutodi who has ordered the private publisher to revert back to old prices.
Soon after Mutodi had issued the order, a group of Harare youths pounced on some newspaper vendors selling copies of the Newsday and burnt them.
Tweeted Mutodi, “If Trevor Ncube continues with his thoughtless rants against licensing authorities, gov will be forced to instruct all its departments, parastals $ associated companies to stop adverts & subscribing AMH produces. You are just Trevor Ncube not Clever Ncube,” he posted.
Ncube, on his part, threatened to expose some of the Zanu PF loyalist’s “scandals”.
“Deputy Information Energy Mutodi says we should respect the office of the minister. He better start talking/conducting himself like a minister for us to respect him. We will not put with mini Jonathan Moyo in our parent ministry. Respect.”
Ncube dared Mutodi to continue sneering at him or “I will pass them (scandals) to our journalists who will decide if they are worth following up”.
The businessman got an unlikely supporter in Zanu PF Gokwe MP Mayor Justice Wadyajena who called the new government official to order.
“Hon Mutodi you’re misusing your Energy. This conduct borders on criminal abuse of office and may one day get you in serious trouble. I know for sure H.E @edmngangagwa disapproves this crap. We did not fight for this. This careless tweet will destroy what Zimbabweans are building,” he tweeted.
