Professor Solwayo Ngwenya urged the country to impose disciplinary action and comply with the lockdown regulations, as he expects a large number of deaths due to Covid-19 in the coming months.
According to official Covid19 statistics released on Monday, the country recorded 60 deaths in a single day. This is the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic since the first case was confirmed in March last year, and 773 people have died.
Professor Ngwenya said that this is only the beginning of terrible numbers, and these numbers will be witnessed.
“Since we allowed the coronavirus to infiltrate the community, we have begun to record a fairly high mortality rate.
“We urge the people and the government to be careful not to let this dangerous virus invade our communities.
He said: “Now its positive rate is 30%, not 10%. This seems to be the beginning of the terrible numbers we are about to see.”
He said citizens should be cautious as the new variant was a killing machine and infects rapidly.
