A Harare man has been dragged to court and charged with the attempted murder of his ex-wife in a row over child support.
Edzai Nyamutawatawa, 45 appeared Monday before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai who remanded him in custody to October 27 for trial.
The complainant in the case is Nyamutawatawa’s ex-wife Anna Debra Mandizha.
According to the State on October 22 last year, Nyamutawatawa was ordered to pay maintenance of $160 for his four minor children with the complainant.
Prosecutors say he did not pay a cent since the order was issued against him and the arrears had reached $1,120 by April this year.
His ex-wife reported the case leading to Nyamutawatawa’s arrest last Friday.
Court heard he was arrested by a ZRP officer only identified as Vuma.
The ex-wife then offered him and the cop transport to court.
It is alleged that along the way, Nyamutawatawa became violent and tried to strangle his ex-wife who was driving the vehicle.
He reportedly shouted “kusiri kufa ndekupi, ndofa newe!” (I will die with you!)
The police officer managed to intervene and restrain him.
Court heard he was handcuffed and taken to court where another docket for attempted murder was opened.
Sebastin Mutizirwa appeared for the State while Nyamutawatawa is being represented by Harare lawyer Gift Mtisi.
