A hailstorm that rocked Chinhoyi this Thursday has left a trail of destruction including extensive damage to a school in the town.
The hailstorm, which lasted for about 15 minutes, blew off the roofing material of the only classroom block at Rujeko High School while students were in class.
The storm also destroyed electricity transmission infrastructure in Rujeko suburb and caused partial damage to some houses.
A member of the community, Victor Round, who witnessed the events unfolding narrated the incident.
“I was outside the school premises watching from a distance and I saw the sheets flying all over due to the strong winds. I think there was poor workmanship on the roof,” he said.
This is the second time the roofing material has been blown at the school.
Chairperson of the School Development Committee, Noah Mukurunge said he was in the headmaster’s office when disaster struck and had to rush to the classrooms to assist in the evacuation process.
“The children did not notice anything until they started to see water pouring from the ceiling. I had to take them to the other classroom which had partial damage. The winds were so strong, I found it difficult to open the door to get out of the head’s office until the storm subsided,” he said.
One female teacher is said to have been injured after being hit by falling bricks but is understood to be in a stable condition.
