Govt STOPS Printing Ordinary Passports, FOCUSES On Emergency And Diaspora Passports
The government has revealed that is has stopped printing ordinary passports because they are not feasible economically at the moment.
Instead, the Registrar’s Office is only printing urgent passports and passports for people in the diaspora who can pay for the valuable documents using foreign currency.
ZiMetro News has established from online publication New Zimbabwe, that this bombshell was revealed on Thursday by the Registrar General Clemence Masango himself. Masango revealed the information to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence, Home Affairs and Security Services who were on tour of the Makombe Building in the capital.
Masango told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee,
At the moment, the $53 passports are on the backlog and not being printed because their charges do not meet the current printing costs.
We are only printing urgent passports and these are only for those who need to travel urgently such as the sick who need medical attention out of the country or those who work outside like truck drivers, those who live outside Zimbabwe and were allowed to pay (passport) fees in foreign currency.
We are also printing some for those who need to go outside for studies.
The registrar general also expressed his frustration with the current pricing being used for ordinary passports saying that it is woefully inadequate. He did, however, say that when the government has purchased all materials for printing passports, they would let the public know.
The consumables were being purchased so that we clear the $53 passport on the backlog. When all is in place, we will inform the public.
Remember the current fees were pegged in USD set in 2009 soon after dollar rising. If we were to make sense, just using the bank rate, we all know that when we import material for passports, the $53 is less than US$3 right now.
Masango said that those individuals who had applied for ordinary passports in the past, need to top up with a further $200 to ensure that their passports are upgraded to urgent status and printed.
