Government implored to pass the Consumer Protection Act
The government has been implored to pass the Consumer Protection Bill into an Act to protect consumers from unscrupulous behavior by businesses and restore confidence in the economy.
It is anticipated that the Consumer Protection Act will stamp out loopholes allegedly being used by manufacturers to profiteer, engage in speculative behavior and provide low-quality goods and services.
The concern is being raised over the short-changing of consumers by businesses through profiteering tendencies and short supply of some goods and services.
Speaking on the sidelines of a Consumer Care Symposium in Harare this Friday, Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) Consumer Services Manager, Engineer Norbert Matarutse, said there is a need for the enacting of the Consumer Protection Act to ensure regular monitoring of unscrupulous traders.
“It is vital that considerations are taken against those who are involved in such dirty acts,” said Matarutse
A customer care expert, Margaret Samundombe, also highlighted that the erosion of customer confidence requires an integrated stakeholders’ approach.
“It is now an issue of everyone because that will be the only way to solve the current challenges,” she said.
Chartered Institute of Customer Relationship Management Executive Director, Dr Mthokozisi Nkosi, says urgent implementation of the Consumer Protection Act will help ease challenges affecting consumers.
“We are anxiously awaiting for the bill to become a reality in addressing the current challenges affecting the general buyers,” said Dr Nkosi.
