Government Allows Locals To Pay For Zimbabwean Passports In USD

The Office of the Registrar General has announced its plans to allow locals to pay for emergency passports with United States Dollars. The statement read:

Reports of SHOCKING passport and toll gate fee increases dismissed as FAKE NEWS

The Registrar General says his office is making considerations to allow local Zimbabweans with free funds to pay for their passports in a foreign currency pegged at $318 usd with the document processed within 24hrs.

Prior to the Announcement Zimbabweans in the diaspora were the only ones permitted to pay for their passports in forex and had to part with USD318.

Currently, the country is facing a huge passport backlog of over 300 000 with people having applied as far back as August 2018 still waiting to collect their passports. The delays have been attributed to foreign currency shortages and the unrealistic price of RTGS53 or USD 2.50 which barely covers the cost of materials. In setting the price in USD, Government has been blasted by citizens for double standards. Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube outlawed the use of forex for local transactions with stiff penalties for companies refusing to comply.

Below are some of the reactions following the controversial decision to charge passports in forex.

The Gvt only allows transactions in USD when it benefits them but if it is an individual doing the same it is considered illegal.

This level of selective application of the law has destroyed our nation immensely!

Nooooo, it’s illegal to use USD in this country! All locals with free funds must liquidate them at an interbank rate within 30 days

We have double standards. If the interbank worked so well like some claim why would the Gvt also want to earn USD!

But 318 yakawandisa is this now a business I thought it was a service.
