Get to know Winky D’s band members.
Electric Strings Attached to Winky D. Vigilance band’s solidness has played a pivotal role in the swiftness of Winky D’s stage work during live performances. ZimCelebs caught up with the band’s electric bass guitarist Tafadzwa Marova (28) who has clocked five years in the band.
The former Prince Edward School jazz vice-captain joined Vigilance in 2014 through Pablo Nakkapa a local jazz mogul. His expertise with electric bass guitar strings made him work with the great Oliver Mtukudzi Chiwoniso Maraire, Mbare trio and Cool Crooners before Wallace Chirimuuko (Winky D).
Having such names in his musical career-portfolio saw him being a resident bassist during Harare International Festival of Arts Hifa in 2012. Marova described his five years playing for Vigilance as a blessing.
“Playing with the same musicians for a long period is undoubtedly a blessing. You know what to expect and this gives you room to branch out and try new things” he said. Like any other instrumentalist who has a particular song he enjoys playing, Tafadzwa Marova distinctively pointed out Winky D’s ‘Disappear’ as his favourite to play too.
Apart from music, the former Umoja bassist is pursuing degrees in Human Resource Management and Development Studies. “During my days at Prince Edward School, I would always prioritize schoolwork over jazz as a way of striving to balance the two. With music, it would come out natural whereas in academics I had to put more effort. Hobbies are becoming professions and one can make a living out of it” he concluded.
