Fire Damage Kwekwe Hospital Staff Quarters
The fire destroyed staff quarters at Kwekwe General Hospital on Tuesday morning, leaving nine families including doctors, physiotherapists, nurses and an administrator without accommodation.
Kwekwe General Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Patricia Mapanda, confirmed the incident. She said:
I can confirm that a fire broke out, razed one of the staff residents and destroyed property.
Staff members, including doctors, lost almost everything as they did not have time to remove their property.
Dr Mapanda said there were no injuries or fatalities as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The incident comes barely a fortnight after 39 health workers and their families at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo were left homeless after a massive fire destroyed their living quarters.
Property valued at US$ 500 000.00 was damaged in the inferno, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said.
