Family Denies Ex-Energy Minister Mike Nyambuya Death Reports

The family of Retired Major-General Michael Rueben Nyambuya, a former deputy president of the Senate, has dismissed reports which say he succumbed to COVID-19.

This follows reports by local publications and a tweet by the ruling ZANU PF which claimed he died on Friday. ZimLive had reported:

#COVID Retired Major General and former minister Mike Nyambuya has also died from Covid-19, it emerged late Friday. He joins a growing list of current and former government bureaucrats to succumb to respiratory illness.

The ruling ZANU PF also posted on Twitter Saturday morning saying the former Energy minister had succumbed to the respiratory infection. Reads the tweet:

Maj. Gen (Rtd) Mike Nyambuya who was Speaker and Deputy Senate President of Parliament has succumbed to #COVID19. We have lost yet another fine soldier.

However, Craig KT Nyambuya posted on Twitter claiming the reports are not true. Responding to a tweet by ZimMorningPost editor, Elias Mambo, Craig said:

Please stop spreading fake news about my family. My uncle is alive and well. Thank you very much.

Also responding to a tweet by NewsDay which read “Retired army general, former Energy minister and ex-deputy Speaker of Senate Mike Nyambuya has died,” Craig reiterated that it was “Not True.”

Mambo later tweeted suggesting that he had spoken to the family and was told that Nyambuya was alive. In a new tweet, he said:

Getting it right…our sources misled us midnight… We have since contacted Nyambuya’s son who said the Rtd Maj general is well… We apologise to our valued readers, family and friends for the inconvenience caused.

Michael Rueben Nyambuya, commanded the ZNA forces at N’Djili Airport, Kinshasa, in 1998, when the Rwandan and allied forces attacked, starting the Second Congo War.

He retired and became Governor of Manicaland, then Minister of Energy and Power Development, and was also Speaker and Deputy Senate President.
