EX-ZPC boss found guilty in US$10K bribe from Wicknell Chivhayo.
The controversial businessman and ex-convict, Chivhayo is said to have paid the money to influence Kazhanje’s decision on the solar power tender which was eventually granted to him. Former Zimbabwe Power Company board chair, Stanley Kazhanje, has been found guilty of concealing a US$10 000 transaction from Intratek boss, Wicknell Chivhayo.
The conviction of the former ZPC boss was arrived at after a full trial by senior regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya. The magistrate said that Kazhanje had failed to explain why he was given the money by Intratek Zimbabwe. Mujaya who postponed to the sentencing to today dismissed Kazhanje’s bail application after the prosecutor, James Chiutsi and Tinashe Makiya opposed the application saying the conviction had taken away the presumption that of innocence. Mujaya ruled:
It is difficult for the court to believe that a man of his stature would have confused the two. It is not clear if the accused person directed the two politicians and the permanent secretary to relay his declaration to the board.
I equally wonder if the accused person forgot to tell this court if he directed the three to relay his message to the board.
This was a transaction between two established companies, but no paper trail was produced in court. A receipt or invoice could have been produced to prove that the transaction was legit.
His intention was to deceive the board and whoever was his principal and is hereby found guilty. Kazhanje was remanded in prison to today.
