Engineers up for $1m fraud
Two engineers were yesterday dragged to court accused of fraud after they reportedly received payment of $1 million for an electrical line construction but did not deliver.
The duo, Ngoni Mpopela, 42, and Steven Tsiga, 31, appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi.
The court heard that in January, the duo was engaged by Golden Engineering represented by Nkatha Godwin to do electrical line construction and purchasing 100KVA electric transformer and all its accessories at Mupane Irrigation scheme in Chakari.
They allegedly misrepresented that if they gave them a total of $1 200 000 and US$2650 they would be able to complete the work to its completion and acting on the misrepresentation the company deposited the $1 200 000 into their account number and later received the USD balance in full.
The court heard that after they received the money, they became evasive and never did the work giving excuses ignoring calls from the company.
Lancelot Mutsokoti appeared for the State.
